Introducing Bird Conservation Oregon

Welcome to the website of Bird Conservation Oregon! We launched this new organization dedicated to protecting wild birds and the habitats on which they depend in 2023. Our staff and board all have long histories of working to protect birds and other wildlife across Oregon.

Birds are valuable in their own right. They make our world a brighter place to live and fill our air with songs. They provide important ecosystem services such as pollination and pest control. They are the proverbial canaries in the coal mine serving as an early warning system for the harm that we are doing to the environment and ourselves and for the increasing impacts of climate change. They are often the first wildlife that children learn to identify and they serve as a powerful connector of people to the environment regardless of what type of landscape you live on. For these reasons, we believe that everyone should live in a place where birds are diverse and abundant and we work across all landscapes from urban, to rural to wild.

Our birds are in trouble. Recent studies indicate that approximately 1 out of every four bird species in North America is facing serious population declines. Other studies tell us that overall bird populations have declined by approximately 3 billion birds since 1970. And with the impacts of climate change getting more obvious with each passing year, the pressure on wild birds will increase in the coming decades. The time to act is now!

Does Oregon need another bird conservation organization? We think there is plenty of work to go around. Each member of the team at Bird Conservation Oregon brings decades of on-the-ground accomplishment advancing conservation across Oregon's urban, rural, and wild landscapes. The team includes deep expertise in wildlife law and policy. It is experienced in advancing cutting-edge collaborative conservation efforts and groundbreaking litigation. We intend to be high impact and low overhead and we will collaborate wherever possible, but fight whenever necessary.
